I don't know about the food but coffee seems pretty typical along with the environment of the place. Old people( all of them, not a single person looks less than 40) chatting, using wifi(like me) and sipping coffee. The Italian owners have been running the place for last 47 years. The place also has the same name since then. The old Italian guy seems to be quite welcoming, laughing, talking(a lot) and appears to be a Des Moines encyclopedia. The youngest looking person in the staff looks very much like a 'wise guy'( no kidding). No smile, frown on his face as if he chose a wrong profession and making small talk as if doing customers a favor, throwing things around behind the counter to look cool( seems like doing a good job) Overall the place is quite slow and normal.

Today was my first time at Mr. Filet. The service was impeccable and the food was great. The line was out the door and the owners knew a lot of the customers that came through. That told me right there that they run a great business. Anyone who loves gyros should eat here.

I do loves me some Mr. Filet's they carve gyro meat right off the spit so have one it is fantastic. I am a big fan of the stake-burger on special every Monday (see photos there is a list of daily specials and cost). Their chicken is really good to and every meat is flamed kissed! The lunches come with the meat, salad, and potato and a big pice of texas toast! You will most likely arrive and there will be a line but no worries they are on top of thing there! Pay attention because you will be behind five people and the first George will yell to you what are ya having (imagine that with a Greek accent) he is friendly about it he does not get all soup Nazi on you. Then you make your way down the lunch style counter and the Second George will ask you fries or baked potato! If your foods not ready they will bring it to you. If you go there at least 3 times a month they will know your name and call it out when they see you. Family run business I hope it never leaves our beautiful DeMo! What are you waiting for it is lunch and you are hungry go eat here! p.s. their breakfast is really good to diner style! Also see photos for menu and prices.

If you're looking for dinner-sized portions for lunch, Mr. Filet is perfect! Where else can you get a flame-broiled ribeye, baked potato (or fries), a side-salad, and a huge piece of Texas toast for under $10? Add a drink and a dessert and you're miserable but satisfied for about $14. They get pretty crowded during lunch, but the line moves fast. You might wait 5 to 10 minutes for your food, but it's worth it. A little hard to find, they are on 7th street in the YWCA building underneath the parking garage. After the fire in 2010, my co-workers and I were afraid they were closed for good. We were all very happy when they re-opened, although we wished they had found a new place in the skywalk. Winter weather and rain play a huge part in our lunch plans and we would have gone there a lot more often if we didn't have to go outside. Mr. Filet is one of the best choices for lunch in downtown Des Moines.

Awesome old school cafeteria-style restaurant! I can't believe I found out about Mr. Filet the week before it is closing!!! From the closing sign on the entrance, Mr. Filet has been around for (48) years!!! Wow!!! When I arrived there was a long line going outside of the door, but it moved very quickly. Once I walked inside, the owner George was yelling for orders four or five people at a time! Now, this behavior may seem rude, but I assure you that it's just to get your order on the grill faster!! Once I placed my order, I grabbed a red cafeteria tray and went down the line. First, there is a glass cooler that has side salads and pie. Next, there are (4) containers with salad dressing. Last, there is younger George asking for your drink and potato order. Their prices are great! It's about $10 for a steak, side salad, baked potato or fries, and a slice of Texas toast. The steaks are great. They are marinated and very juicy. They almost do not need any additional sauce, but they do have Worcestershire sauce. Overall, an excellent lunch restaurant that serves dinner-sized portions at lunch rates. I only wished I had discovered this place earlier before they closed!! Oh well. Good luck with retirement George!

Mr. Fillet is a great downtown lunch staple. Unfortunately, when they finally tear down the parking garage they reside under, I do not believe they will reopen anywhere else, at least that's the word for now. The prices are great for the quantity of food. Personally, I am not a fan of their steaks, but I do LOVE their grilled chicken. The seasoning is phenomenal! Sometimes I just crave grilled chicken and a baked potato and it hits the spot. The baked potatoes are truly baked, not the hard microwaved gray item that some places serve. It is fluffy served with a generous helping of butter (I believe you can get sour cream and other toppings) and then add the salad and Texas toast, yes please! Another comfort food item is the grilled cheese since they make it with their Texas toast. If there is a line when you arrive, don't let that scare you off. They are great at moving you through quickly.

This is a very popular downtown breakfast and lunch establishment that looks better than ever after recently re-opening after a fire. If you are looking for unique or diverse menu items, go somewhere else. However, the basic meat and potatoes menu is incredibly reasonably priced for the quantity and you can not ask for faster or friendlier service during a weekday lunch. They probably serve the best grilled cheese sandwich around.

Review stars based on what this place is, a cheap steakhouse. I always go here for lunch because of it's location. I don't even know if they are open in the evening. They do a great lunch business because the prices are very reasonable, the food is great, the service is very fast, and the people are nice. This is one of the few remaining places of its kind in Des Moines. It, like all it's predicessors is owned and run by Greek immigrants who work hard and offer a good product at a good price. They happen to be nice people too, which isn't that important to me, but does make it easier to justify going. There used to be several similar places here, but as the owners have retired, they simply went out of business. That is a shame. You stand in a short, fairly fast moving line to place your order. You also pick up a salad, put your own dressing on it, pick up table service, pay for your choices, etc in that line. If your steak is not done by then, you side down and they will bring it to you. How can they remember who ordered what? That is a mystery to me, but they do it. The steaks are not huge and are not USDA prime. They are a reasonable portion and they are reasonably tender, none the less. They also taste great. Part of it is the flame broiling. There must be other secrets though, because they can't be that tasty just from that. The place is below the street level and under a skywalk so it is a tiny bit hard to find. The atmosphere is more like a school cafeteria that anything else, but you will enjoy your meal enough to ignore the surroundings. Besides, they are always clean and to me that is more important that most other factors.
